Advancing Strategic Vision
In a significant step toward strengthening partnerships and expanding its global outlook, the executives of the African Medical Tourism Council (AMTC) have held a high-level engagement in Accra with the internationally acclaimed plastic surgeon, Michael K. Obeng. The meeting marked a pivotal moment in AMTC’s journey to position Ghana as a leading destination for Medical Tourism and healthcare excellence.
Dr. Obeng, a Ghanaian-born, U.S.-based surgeon and founder of Restoration Plastic Surgery Group, is globally recognised not only for his surgical expertise but also for his humanitarian interventions across underserved communities. His work, which blends cutting-edge medical innovation with a deep sense of social responsibility, aligns closely with AMTC’s mission of promoting accessible, high-quality healthcare services across the continent.
During the meeting, Dr. Obeng expressed strong enthusiasm for AMTC’s vision and reaffirmed his willingness to collaborate in achieving its strategic objectives. He emphasised the immense potential Ghana/Africa holds in the global medical tourism space, citing the continent’s growing pool of skilled professionals, improving healthcare infrastructure and increasing international interest.
“This is the right time for Ghana and to a large extent Africa to take its place in the global healthcare ecosystem,” Dr. Obeng noted. He also commented, “with the right partnerships, investment and coordination, we can build a system that not only attracts international patients but also delivers world-class care to our own people.”
The engagement explored several areas of collaboration, including knowledge transfer, capacity building, international accreditation, and the development of specialised medical services that can position Ghana and the wider African region as competitive medical tourism hubs. Dr. Obeng’s global network and experience are expected to play a critical role in bridging gaps between African healthcare providers and international markets.
On his part the President of AMTC, Dr Koby Appiah-Sakyi noted “this meeting represents more than just a partnership, it signals a growing momentum toward transforming healthcare delivery into a key driver of economic growth, job creation and international recognition”. He emphasized that the Council will continue to engage key stakeholders across sectors, from healthcare practitioners and investors to policymakers and diaspora professionals, to build a robust and sustainable Medical Tourism ecosystem.
As AMTC advances its agenda, collaborations with globally respected figures like Dr. Obeng are set to accelerate progress and inspire confidence among both local and international stakeholders. The Council remains committed to fostering partnerships that bring innovation, expertise and investment into Ghana’s healthcare sector.
In his closing remarks Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, former CEO of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and an Executive Board Member of AMTC who coordinated the meeting reiterated; “Today’s engagement stands as a testament to what can be achieved when visionary leadership meets global expertise. With shared commitment and strategic collaboration, the future of Medical Tourism in Ghana and Africa looks increasingly promising”.
