Uncovering the dark past of Fort Metal Cross

Fort Metal Cross is one of historic landmarks in Ghana that played a significant and a dark role in the transatlantic slave trade. You will find it in the coastal town of Dixcove, in the Western Region of Ghana. Fort Metal Cross is a must-visit destination for those who want to have a peek into Ghana's dark past.

A Brief History

The British built fort Metal Cross in the late 1600s as a trading post to export gold and ivory to Europe. However, soon it became a central point for the slave trade. Incredible numbers of Africans were captured and held here before being sold to European slave traders. It got its name after a large metal cross that stood near the entrance, which was used as a navigational aid for ships. The fort had many owners over the years, with the Dutch and Portuguese occupying it at different times. In 1872, the British took it over and used it as a colonial administrative center until Ghana gained independence in 1957.

The fort has many underground dungeons where slaves were held in inhumane conditions before being transported to the Americas and Europe. Fort Metal Cross is one fort in Ghana that has seen little of restorations, giving visitors a glimpse into its raw history. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat and sunscreen.

The fort is open to visitors every day from 9 am to 5 pm, and admission is free.
