About the falls

Akaa Falls are seasonal falls. During the full stream, you will be encircled in a gully of falling water. Waterfall is around 15 metres tall and it has become a popular place for a hike or picnic. Boti, Asenewaa, and Akaa Falls make the Boti area and nearby villages a popular destination in the Eastern Region for those who appreciate natural environments. All 3 falls source from the same stream - Boti waterway - and therefore, are seasonal.

Getting to Akaa Falls will require a short hike through the forest. To reach this waterfall, you will need to climb 250 concrete steps that provide a scenic view. Listen to the sounds of nature. The occasional monkey swinging from tree to tree will meet you as you make your way through the woodland. Keep a lookout for other wildlife, too - you might spot colourful birds and beautiful butterflies fluttering by.

Once you reach the base, you will find water falling from three sides if the water stream is strong enough. It is a beautiful sight of the water cascading down the rocky cliffs. The mist from the falls will cool you off. Take a swim in the refreshing water, hike around the falls, or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Akaa Falls is an excellent spot for bird-watching, so bring your binoculars, camera and keep your eyes peeled for the many colourful species!

Have a ‘shopping therapy’ in lively markets or try some of the local street food, such as kelewele (spicy fried plantains) or waakye (a dish made with rice and beans).

Getting to Akaa Falls

Akaa Waterfall is situated approximately 7 kilometres from the Boti Falls . It is nearly a 2-hour drive from Accra or a 1-hour drive from Koforidua.

Travel Tips: 

• Consider visiting Akaa Falls during the annual Aboakyer Festival in May. This festival celebrates the traditional hunting traditions of the Effutu people and features a lively procession through the streets of Winneba, culminating in a ritual hunt for a live antelope. 
• Best time to visit: right after the rainy season. 
• The entrance charge is around 5 cedis per visitor. 
• Don't forget to pack your swimwear, comfortable shoes for hiking, a camera, some food, enough water supplies, and a mosquito repellent for an enjoyable trip! 
• Share a smile with local staff on the site. Say: ‘ayekoo’ (meaning: “you’re doing a good job”). This makes them smile!
