History

The market is believed to have existed long before Ghana gained independence. Its geographical location has contributed immensely to its growth.

'Kotokoraba" which means Crab Village" is believed to have been named by the early settlers due to the abundance of crabs in the area. Its proximity to Mfantsipim school has also contributed to its popularity and growth.

Over the years, the market has experienced fire destructions leading to the loss of shop structures and thousands of cedis. It is estimated that about 104 stalls have been destroyed. The fire could have caused more damage if not for the intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service. At first glance its entrance looks like a stadium. The Government of Ghana can be given credit for redeveloping the dilapidated market after it had faced these severe fire outbreaks. It now consists of a clinic, office blocks, a car park and two banks.
