Edina Bakatue Festival

Details

Edina Bakatue Festival falls on the first Tuesday of July (the month of Ayewoho) each year. It is celebrated in honour of the founder of the central town Elmina, the headquarters to Edina Traditional Area. The festival is used to mark the beginning of the fishing season in Elmina. The name Bakatue is from the Fante dialect and translates as draining of a lagoon.

On the morning of the festival, all members of the Elmina royal family participate in a royal possession made up of chiefs and stool carriers. Chiefs of higher towns in the Elmina paramount area ride decorated palanquins. Things to look out for are the boat races between fisherman and the riding on the lagoon by boat by the women.
