Gallery 1957

Gallery 1957 is a dynamic contemporary art gallery located in Accra, Ghana, that offers visitors a captivating experience of West African and diaspora art.

Founded by Marwan Zakhem, a British construction company owner, the gallery opened its doors on Ghanaian Independence Day, March 6, 2016, and takes its name from the significant year when Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule. With its commitment to presenting the works of talented artists from the region, Gallery 1957 has become a vital cultural hub in Accra.

Situated within the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Gallery 1957 occupies a 140-square-meter space, elegantly blending art and hospitality. The gallery's partnership with the hotel creates a unique environment where visitors can immerse themselves in contemporary Ghanaian art while enjoying the luxurious setting. Additionally, the gallery has expanded and now also has a location at the Galleria Mall, offering even more accessibility to art enthusiasts and the general public.

Under the creative direction of Nana Oforiatta Ayim, a Ghanaian writer and filmmaker, Gallery 1957 presents a vibrant program of exhibitions, installations, and performances by some of the country's most significant artists. The gallery aims to bridge the gap between local and international audiences, fostering cultural exchange and dialogue. Throughout its history, Gallery 1957 has showcased the works of renowned artists such as Serge Attukwei Clottey, Gideon Appah, Modupeola Fadugba, Godfried Donkor, Yaw Owusu, and Zohra Opoku, among others.

Gallery 1957 not only serves as a platform for established artists but also supports emerging talent through initiatives like the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize. This art prize, dedicated to African female artists, recognizes and celebrates their contributions to the international art scene, further emphasizing the gallery's commitment to inclusivity and gender representation.

In addition to its gallery spaces, Gallery 1957 actively engages with the public through various cultural events. These include fairs, talks, off-site projects, and site-specific installation commissions, all aimed at promoting artistic dialogue and encouraging collaboration within the vibrant Ghanaian art scene. The gallery's dedication to nurturing cultural initiatives extends beyond its physical walls, showcasing its commitment to the development and growth of contemporary art in Ghana and beyond.

If you're planning a visit to Gallery 1957, it's advisable to check their opening hours. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, with varying opening hours from 11:00 to 19:00.
