Trashy Bags Africa

Trashy Bags Africa, a UK-owned commercial social enterprise based in Ghana, is at the forefront of promoting the circular economy through plastic waste recycling. We have revolutionized the perception of plastic waste by identifying alternative functions and ensuring its continued use within the circular economy. By doing so, we contribute to a sustainable future and mitigate the negative environmental impact of plastic waste.

One of the significant benefits of our approach is the removal of various forms of waste, including water sachets, which are vital for providing safe drinking water in Ghana. Instead of letting this waste end up in the ocean, landfill, or being burnt, we utilise it as a valuable resource to create durable and sustainable products. This transformation process directly uses the raw materials, eliminating the need for additional emissions and reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional manufacturing.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, our factory in Accra operates on 100% solar energy. By harnessing renewable energy sources, we ensure that all our products contribute to the circular economy while minimizing environmental impact. This aligns with our vision of creating a closed-loop system where materials are continuously reused and repurposed.

In addition to our environmental impact, Trashy Bags Africa actively addresses social issues by creating local employment opportunities, with a focus on empowering women. Through our network of local collectors, we source over 200,000 pieces of plastic waste each month. This not only helps in waste management but also generates income for these collectors. Moreover, we employ over thirty local individuals, 90% of them being women, who are involved in designing, cleaning, and stitching plastic waste into fashionable and useful bags and other products. By providing these employment opportunities, we contribute to the economic development of the local community and promote gender equality.

Our commitment and impact have garnered recognition from the Government of Ghana through their flagship program, the "National Plastic Action Partnership." As a leader in Reduction and Innovation, Trashy Bags Africa actively collaborates with the government and other stakeholders to address the challenges of alternative recycling practices. By working together, we aim to promote sustainable waste management practices, inspire innovation, and create a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

Since our establishment, we have made significant strides in the recycling of plastic waste, having collected and recycled over 30 million pieces (December 2022). Through our efforts, we showcase the potential of circular economy principles in transforming waste into valuable resources. By setting an example and leading by action, Trashy Bags Africa aims to inspire others to adopt similar practices and contribute to a more sustainable and circular future.

In conclusion, Trashy Bags Africa is dedicated to promoting the circular economy by transforming plastic waste into practical and sustainable products. Through our innovative approach, powered by renewable energy, we not only contribute to waste reduction but also create employment opportunities and empower local communities. As a recognized leader in plastic waste reduction and innovation, we remain committed to driving positive change and inspiring others to join us on the journey toward a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Ghana.
