Description
Ghana’s coastline is famous for its ancient forts and castles built by the early European traders between 1482 –1787. Amongst these are world Heritage Monuments – Osu Castle which served as seat of government; Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is believed to be the oldest and largest European building in sub-saharan Africa; Cape Coast Castle from where the Gold Coast Colony was governed till 1876, and many others. There are also unique traditional buildings such as Asante traditional houses, Fanti Posuban shrines, the Larabanga mosque, the Wulugu traditional castle, and various intricate paintings in frescoes on the walls of traditional compound houses in parts of Ghana’s Upper East Region.
